( A State Government University )

Message from Vice-Chancellor

State Agricultural universities (SAUs) are autonomous organizations with responsibilities to conduct, disseminate, execute and upgrade agricultural teaching, research, extension and training across the state. The SAUs have played vital role in restructuring and emboldening the agricultural education system in India and have been based on a pattern similar to that of the land-grant universities in the United States. These universities are branches of research under the ICAR and became the partners of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS). Birsa Agricultural University is one such SAUs set up with the primary objective to develop area specific technologies and create trained manpower in the field of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Forestry, Dairy, Fishery etc. for the undulating topography and resource-poor farmers of Chhotanagpur & Santhalpargana region. It was established on June 26, 1981 with formal inauguration by the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Bestowed with a sprawling campus spread over 3551 acres of land, it has eleven prestigious colleges offering quality education in various streams. Ranchi-based Agriculture College, established in 1955, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, set up in 1961, Asia’s first Forestry College, established in 1979 and was brought under BAU.

The centre for Biotechnology, set up in 1999 was upgraded as College of Biotechnology in 2005. These are its earlier established colleges. Seven new colleges, viz Rabindra Nath Tagore Agriculture College, Deoghar; Tilka Manjhi Agriculture College, Godda; Agriculture College, Garhwa; Phulo Jhano Dairy Technology College, Hansdiha, Dumka; College of Fisheries Science, Gumla, College of Horticulture, Khuntpani, West Singhbhum and College of Agricultural Engineering, Ranchi came into existence 6-7 years ago.  Centre for Agribusiness Management offering PG course in ABM is also working for nearly 15 years. The regular Bachelors’, Master’s and Ph.D. programmes are running in the three colleges namely the Ranchi Agricultural College, College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry and College of Forestry since long. With the launching of UGC approved 3-year B.Voc. programme in Herbal Resource Technology and Human Nutrition & Dietetics a few years ago, we are striving to improve the scope and ambit of Birsa Agricultural University for the benefit of the masses the of state. Despite the dearth of teaching faculty, quality education is being imparted and we are modulating our teaching programme in line with New National Education Policy.

With a mandate of teaching, research and extension education, Birsa Agricultural University has been continuously producing able graduates and post graduates who have created a niche for themselves in different career streams. This Agricultural University is providing opportunity to the students hailing from poor families of the state having about 26.3 % tribal population. The state, through BAU, has been trying to economically strengthen the poor, reduce the percentage of drop-outs unable to pursue higher education due to financial incapability and bring the tribals from remote areas to main stream by equipping them with the power of education, knowledge and awareness.

Several alumni of this university have served in senior positions of academic, financial or administrative fields. With more than fifty students of various colleges of Birsa Agricultural University being placed through placement fair and placement drives by the placement cells during last one year, University promises to keep encouraging the students for admission in the agriculture and allied streams of country’s leading universities for incredible placement opportunities. For providing motivation, guidance and support to our students for having lucrative career after graduation or post-graduation from our university, we provide regular online and offline career guidance to help them reach the zenith.

The students are excelling in almost all fields for which I salute the dedicated efforts of teachers and scientists. It is heartening to note that over 60% of the students getting enrolled here in UG courses are girls. When a girl gets higher education, she educates the whole family. Majority of farming operations in Jharkhand are performed by women and when these girl students after obtaining degrees will go to farm women as extension officials or scientists, women farmers will accept their advice and recommendations with higher degree of comfort and confidence. Women’s contribution is crucial to building a strong and vibrant nation because they tend to work in a less hierarchical, more participatory and more collaborative manner.

BAU is working relentlessly in collaboration with ICAR research institutes, State government, Government of India and its various Departments like Department of Agriculture, Department of Science & Technology, Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, NGOs, various national and International Organizations for its commitment towards Jharkhand in particular and India in general to make it amongst top three Nations of world in terms of GDP in the upcoming three years as resolved by Government of India.

This University solemnly resolves to work in its thrust areas using modern tools and techniques for increasing productivity and strengthening research in emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence, Genome editing, Drone application, Simulation techniques, Embryo Transfer Technology, Cloning, Sex sorted Semen, modern disease diagnostic methods, CAS9, CRISPR, Nanotechnology, Nutraceuticals, varietal improvement in crop and animal breeds as per the need and breeding policy of the state along with IFS farming models, natural farming and ITKs. Characterization, documentation, registration and conservation of Indigenous germplasm would be taken up so that they can be further utilized in breeding programme for enhancement of specific trait(s) to cater to biotic and abiotic stresses. Global warming and changing climate are issues of major concern worldwide. Appropriate steps like development of breeds/varieties with climate resilience would be our one of the top priorities to mitigate the effect of global warming on plant and animal based food product in the long run. Appropriate delivery mechanism of need-based, area-specific, low-cost and system-responsive technologies through extension agencies like KVKs and ATMAs will be promoted at grassroots level for technical empowerment of farmers. University will support Government in making of robust seed policy to enhance seed replacement rate. It will also undertake necessary steps and research for conservation of water, soil and air while enhancing the productivity.

I am thoroughly obliged and privileged by the highly committed and sincere members of BAU family who work beyond the solar day and night for betterment of Birsa Agricultural University and I Promise my complete support and guidance towards the same. Let us all vow to work sincerely and efficiently in our individual capacities towards Vision Viksit Bharat 2047.
