The Undergraduate Programme

The Faculty offers 8 Semester programme in Agriculture leading to B. Sc. Ag. (Hons.) Degree. Admission is taken on the basis of results of Joint Entrance Examination conducted by State Government. Fifteen per cent seats are filled up by the National Level Test conducted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Altogether 169 credit hours are required to complete the graduate programme. The Faculty has adopted 10-point grading with OGPA of 5.0 for being eligible to get a degree. The examination and evaluation consist of 50 per cent internal and 50 per cent external. The students have to maintain a minimum of 75 per cent attendance. At undergraduate level, the central objective of academic programme is to produce professional agricultural graduates for extension purposes and rural development who are competent to provide technical expertise to 7 farmers and associate functionaries for improving the efficiency of crop production system and raising the income of farmers for livelihood security. The courses have been restructured to equip the agricultural graduates with emerging concepts and technologies in frontier areas so that natural resources of the country can be harnessed on sustainable basis for the benefit of people.

RAWE Programme

To improve and develop confidence and competence, course work on Practical Crop Production (PCP), Practical Vegetable and Flower Production (PVFP), Plant Clinic (PC) and Soil, Plant and Water Analysis (SPWA) constitute the important components of teaching programme. As a technical professional degree, emphasis has been given on Packages of Skill/Entrepreneurship Oriented Courses, each of 20 credit hours in VIII Semester. In VII Semester, the study programme has been so organized to acquaint the students with the agricultural and development problems of the rural areas.

The Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) Programme has been strengthened by providing 20 credit hours of multidisciplinary work in rural areas. Students visit Krishi Vigyan Kendra, NGOs, Zonal Research Stations, ICAR Institutions & Agricultural Development Agencies & gather relevant information. For 3 to 4 months, they stay in Zonal Stations & KVK & visit rural areas & interact with farmers. Finally at the end of Semester they prepare & submit individual & group reports & present them before Faculty for evaluation.

Post Graduate Programme

The Post-graduate Programme constitutes various Master and Doctoral Degree programmes. Master programme is offered by the Departments of Agril. Economics, Agril. Entomology, Agril. Physics & Meteorology, Agril. Statistics, Crop Physiology, Ag. Extension Education, Horticulture, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology, Soil Science & Agril. Chemistry.

Doctoral level programme is offered by the Department of Agril. Economics, Agril. Extension, Horticulture, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Soil Science & Agril. Chemistry.

New and restructured post-graduate curricula & Syllabi as per recommendation of ICAR Education Division is being implemented from the current session (2009-10). These courses are designed for better employment opportunities both in Private & Public Sector & entrepreneurship development so that the society can have better professionals in Agricultural Sciences.

Centre for Agribusiness Management

This is a new programme implemented in the University from 2007. The course focuses on creating manpower with domain knowledge of agricultural science and the concepts of business management to serve as professionals in agriculture, food industry and rural business management to serve as professionals in agriculture, food industry and rural business. The students admitted will have excellent exposure to agribusiness management and rural marketing by extensive interaction with the industry. Further, the students will get opportunity to become professional with managerial skills, positive attitude and a personality acceptable by industry and related sectors. There is an unprecedented demand of such qualified agribusiness professionals to competently manage the operations and drive the growth in agriculture & allied sectors. This is a two year full time Post-graduate Degree Course divided into four Semesters, summer placements and project work. The programme emphasizes on management skills like communication, decision-making leadership, discipline & team work. Dr. R. K. Biswas is the Director of the Centre.

Department of Home Science

This is the first University in the State of Jharkhand to start Diploma in Food Processing and Certificate course in Fruit and Vegetable Processing technology as well as Bakery & Confectionary, with a view to inculcate vocational and entrepreneurial skills for better employment opportunities among college dropouts, rural youths and primarily the disadvantaged sections of the society. Department of Home Science was established during the year 2006-07 at the main campus of the University. The Department aims to groom youth as enterprising, promising and confident young men and women to face challenges of career and life.

Diploma on “Food Processing” and Certificate Course on “Fruit and Vegetable Processing Technology” is being offered in the Department from Academic session 2007-08 with mandate to generate expertise for self employment and employment potential in catering, food industries, hotels etc. To gain floor experience, one month training in the food industry as well as exposure visits to the food industries are integral part of the diploma programme.

Two pilot plants have been established in the Department of Home Science. These are : Soy milk extraction plant & Tortilla Machine

Placement committee comprising of students and faculty members make constant endeavor for placement of students. 90% placement of students were achieved during the session 2007-08 and the centre will strive to achieve 100% placement.
